Glee ends its third season run on May 22, leaving Gleeks everywhere without something to sing to. You can practically hear the cries beginning now! But, fear not. I’ve compiled a list of five other TV shows with characters/plots/themes/etc. similar to Glee to help occupy your time until everyone’s favorite musical comedy is back on our screens. Read on and let me know if you have any shows you think I should add!
Smash tracks the journey of a musical production based on the life of Marilyn Monroe through all of its trials and tribulations. A central focus on the show involves casting the lead role, with two girls (Karen and Ivy) competing to be the star. The show is also a musical, containing covers and original songs each episode. Both female leads on the show remind me of Rachel. Ivy certainly has that Rachel Berry determination and is willing to do whatever it takes to make it to the top. Karen mirrors Rachel’s small town background as well as having to juggle wanting to be the star and a boyfriend (Finn, anyone?). Although the show isn’t necessarily a comedy it’s interesting to see the inner workings of a musical production–and just the right amount of drama to go along with it.
Victorious follows Tori Vega (Victoria Justice) and all of her adventures after she is accepted into Hollywood Arts High School, a school for performing arts students. Like many children’s based shows, Tori and her friends end up in plenty of sticky situations and learn many different life lessons along the way. The show also contains plenty of catchy original songs for you to sing and dance along with. Tori working to find her place at Hollywood Arts High School certainly echoes Rachel and her NYADA dream, wouldn’t you say? Perhaps Rachel and Tori could teach each other a thing or two!
Based on the 1980 film of the same name, Fame follows a group of students and faculty while attending New York High School for the Performing Arts. Each of the students face their own drama while using music to cope and celebrate life. Much like Glee, Fame also had its share of tributes to artists like Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder.
4. One Tree Hill
One Tree Hill begins as a show following the lives of the teens of Tree Hill, North Carolina. It contains a mixture of drama and comedy while the characters learned lessons in life, love, and everything in between. Much like Glee, One Tree Hill has its fair share of love triangles and quadrangles as well as plenty partner swapping. Also like Glee, music is also a major part of One Tree Hill, with various characters working toward a singing career. These characters include Haley James (Bethany Joy Lenz), Chris Keller (Tyler Hilton), and Mia Catalano (Kate Voegele).
5. Degrassi: The Next Generation
You’re probably tired of hearing about teen dramas by now, but here’s one more for you! Degrassi: The Next Generation tracks the lives of students at Degrassi Community School in Canada. Each week revolves around a new character tacking tough plots like homosexuality, sexual assault, teen pregnancy, and more, just like Glee has done in the past. Degrassi has also transitioned through quite a few casts now, rotating out the graduating seniors and bringing in new characters. Glee could learn a thing or two from the show given the impending graduation of many of its core characters.
