A Family Reunited: My Rachel-centric Review of ‘Hold On To Sixteen’

Last night’s episode of Glee found opposing clubs the New Directions and the TroubleTones going head-to-head at their own school at Sectionals. Although New Directions came out of the battle victorious, in the end, it was everyone who were the winners. Hold On To Sixteen was one of those episodes of Glee that reminded me of why I fell in love with it in the first place. Every story, musical number, and character was real, believable, and compelling. I’d go so far as to say Hold On To Sixteen was the best episode of season three thus far.

In addition to the Sectionals competition, we finally got to see Sam Evans (and his abs!) back on our screens, which was a very welcome comeback. I’m interested to see the Sam/Mercedes interaction and to see his fight to win her back, as well as more of Sam’s interaction with the new glee clubbers. Speaking of which, I wasn’t thrilled to see the way Blaine treated Sam not even five minutes after he had returned.

I was especially happy to see Quinn finally get redeemed a little and to see that some of her glee clubbers finally helped her see the error of her ways. However, it all seemed a little forced and far too quick. I’m sad we didn’t get to see more of her journey towards recovery.

Now, onto the best part of every episode: Rachel Berry!

Favorite Rachel Performance: We Are Young

In my absolute favorite part of last night’s episode, Rachel led the group in a song celebrating their victory at Sectionals, only to be joined by Mercedes, Brittany, Santana, and Sugar (!) who returned to their little family. I was so happy to see the whole group reunited and I definitely had a few tears during their reunion song.

Favorite Rachel Quote: “I got a taste of what it’s like to do the wrong thing…and it feels awful.”

During Rachel’s discussion with Quinn where she asked her not to tell Figgins about Shelby and Puck sleeping together, Rachel made sure to tell Quinn that telling such a secret comes with a price. Rachel knows all about messing things up or hurting others and it meant a lot to hear her acknowledge this while also helping Quinn along the way.

Favorite Rachel Moment: Faberry’s ‘Kinda’ Friendship

After Puck pointed out last week that, although everyone was rallying behind Santana during her coming out saga, no one was truly behind Quinn, I was waiting to see who was going to step up and be there for her during this obviously difficult time. Leave it to our Rachel to help Quinn see the error of her ways, while also offering her support and encouragement throughout. I really hope we see more of the Faberry friendship in the near future!

Favorite Rachel Outfit: We Are Young dress/beret

I absolutely loved the dress Rachel wore at the end of the episode while performing We Are Young with her fellow glee clubbers. I especially loved the added touch of her fabulous yellow beret!

Next week, Glee’s celebrating an ‘Extraordinary Merry Christmas’ and you can be sure that will bring plenty of touching holiday moments between all your favorite couples!

  1. I absolutely loved that dress (I initially thought it was a skirt) at the end of the episode. Does anyone know where it can be found? Or something similar?
